Controls Basic Programming

In this hands-on class, students will acquire the skills and supporting knowledge to program, and operate an nLight® system. Topics include functional operation and installation best practices for nLight and nLight AIR.

Controls Design Applications

During this in-person program, students will participate in an interactive approach to controls design in applications. Instructors provide detailed product information, then show students how to apply products to put together a lighting control solution using Sensor Switch and nLight Platform lighting control systems within Acuity’s Visual Controls software.

Acuity Brands Stock and Project Solutions

This in-person seminar will provide attendees with an overview of Acuity Brand’s most common stock and project solutions from some of the most popular brands in the industry including Lithonia Lighting™, Juno™, SensorSwitch™, nLight®, and IOTA™.  Presenters will highlight readily available and configurable products to capture opportunity business and meet tight project timelines.

Designing nLight Wired Systems Using Viral Controls Design Software

In this Virtual Instructor-Led class, students will participate in an interactive approach to using design software to assist in lighting controls design. Instructors provide basic product information, then show students how to apply products to put together a lighting control solution using the Visual Controls design software. Students will learn how to develop nLight Air solutions by applying electrical concepts, lighting control strategies, and product knowledge. Students will also create layouts, bill of materials, riser diagrams, schedules, and comprehensive documentation for multiple nLight Wired solutions using the Visual Controls design software.

LED Optical Design | 1 LU/HSW

This learning unit provides a general overview of the importance of Optical Design using LED light sources. We will review the basic Principles of Optics, LED technologies, Optics for LEDs and the successful integration into luminaire designs. The focus of this presentation is towards interior applications, but many of the principles and concepts carry over to exterior luminaire designs.

RP-46-25 is here, now what?: 1LU | HSW

Circadian supportive lighting is an innovative approach to lighting design. However, traditional lighting practices often require very high light levels and energy consumption to meet the standards outlined in RP-46-25. This session will delve into the design parameters necessary to meet the requirements of RP-46-25 and introduce a formula for achieving this standard, known as application efficiency. This will provide practical insights for professionals implementing circadian lighting. It is essential to recognize that measuring circadian supportive lighting differs from measuring conventional lighting. It is crucial to consider the role of color and spectrum, as different light colors and spectrums impact circadian rhythms.

Blue Sky Lighting 101: 1LU | HSW

This course explores Blue-Sky Lighting as a design strategy that brings the biological benefits of natural daylight indoors. Participants will examine key concepts such as melanopic light, circadian-effective lighting, and spectral distribution, and understand how these factors influence occupant health in built environments. The course will demonstrate how to design and implement lighting systems that support human performance while maintaining compliance with energy codes and lighting standards. Real-world applications in offices, educational facilities, and healthcare environments will be reviewed to illustrate how improved lighting design contributes to safer, healthier, and more productive spaces. Attendees will also evaluate current lighting solutions on the market, including practical, scalable technologies that enable designers to integrate biologically effective lighting without increasing complexity or making it cost-prohibitive. This course qualifies for AIA LU/HSW as it addresses how lighting design directly impacts occupant health, safety, and welfare through improved environmental conditions and human-centric design strategies.

Comprehensive Overview of Lighted Mirrors | 1 LU/HSW

Participants will explore the energy efficiency benefits and examine integrated technologies. The course also covers important design and selection considerations, including quality and aesthetics, which contribute to both functional performance and visual appeal.

Advanced Lighting and User-Designed Controls for Modern Classroom: 1LU | HSW, 1 LEU

Reducing energy costs and complying with energy codes is only part of the equation for good lighting control for the modern classroom. This presentation examines how we can choose to improve learning with light color and light intensity. Understanding prior research and a recent Department ofEnergy funded study that states teachers, administrators and other users see lighting as a powerful tool to enhance the learning environment and cue behavior within the classroom setting. A key objective of this presentation is to analyze how peers’ feedback led to the design of a user friendly interface to meet the objectives of a simple, intuitive, preset control that teachers could modify to suit their goals. A significant part of the study outcome and presentation explains how to make this technology affordable so that it can be implemented today in designing schools that have no additional source of funding. With this user designed lighting control solution, this course explains how the modern classroom can support learning while minimizing operating costs.

Designing with Acoustics for a Better Working Environment: 1LU | HSW, 1 LEU

The design of tomorrow will increase the use of glass, concrete, exposed ceilings, and other hard surfaces into the built environment. These architectural elements not only deliver modern and desirable aesthetics, but also provide surfaces that are easily cleanable. The continued use of these non-sound absorbing elements will present us with acoustical challenges and will have direct impacts on occupants well-being and productivity. This course will dive into modern design and the health impacts related to these decisions. We will also explore the ways architectural acoustics impact the interior environment and occupants. Lastly, we will learn how to properly identify and specify sound absorbing materials while exploring the types and benefits associated with luminaire integration.

Designing with Linear: Luminaire Design Metrics and Lighting Trends for Modern Environments: 1LU | HSW, 1 LEU

In this course we will analyze the value that lighting brings to modern interior environments and its occupants. This presentation will discuss foundational elements of lighting design and examine industry benchmarks for luminaire specification. Lastly, we will examine strategies for lighting modern applications, including Education, Commercial, Healthcare, and Transportation Hubs.

Product Transparency for the Future of Healthy Buildings: 1LU | HSW, 1 LEU

Product transparency and sustainable design is a green building initiative gaining momentum with specifiers and building owner requesting materials free of harmful chemical toxins in an effort to create healthier, high performing environments. In this seminar we will discuss why project teams should be seeking out product transparency documentation to achieve their material ingredient transparency and optimization goals. We will dive into recent green building standards with an emphasis on the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge, Red List, and Declare 2.0 program. Lastly, explain how project teams can use this information to make more informed decisions and achieve various credits, features, and imperatives within the LEED, WELL and Living Building Challenge.

Understanding, Light, Color, and Emerging Metrics: 1LU | HSW, 1 LEU

This course will provide attendees with an overview and update regarding how Tunable White LED technology has revolutionized lighting. Attendees will learn emerging concepts regarding Tunable White and gain an understanding how lighting can be used for preference, alertness, and circadian entrainment.

Strategies for Designing with Integrated Lighting and Acoustic Solutions: 1LU | HSW, 1 IDCEC

This course will review the importance of acoustics in architecture, discuss the fundamental principles of sound management, explore how to design interior spaces to maximize occupants’ comfort, and review emerging tools to solve for both sound and lighting. It will also focus on the standards that govern acoustic requirements for diverse applications.

UL924 & UL1008 – What you need to know: ISO-1010-2023 | 1 LU/HSW

NFPA 70, the national electrical code details 2 different types of Emergency Lighting Control Devices — devices that guarantee that life safety lighting will be on at desired illumination levels in the event of an emergency. This course will help mitigate the confusion regarding the specification of these devices and understand their applications in the real world.

Inverters: ISO-1002-2023 | 1 LU/HSW

Inverters are a modern, simple way to achieve an emergency lighting solution while minimizing maintenance costs and utilizing existing architectural fixtures for emergency purposes. This course will give the student the skills they require to design and specify inverter-based emergency lighting systems.

Emergency Lights: ISO-0502-2023 | 0.5 LU/HSW

This course is designed to introduce the architect to emergency lights. These lights are meant to be selected and installed according to specific standards established by building codes. Additionally, once installed, these systems must be tested to assure their efficacy in case of an emergency. How to select and specify the appropriate markers and the technological solutions available, as well as testing methods, will all be covered in this course.

Egress Marking and Illumination: ISO-0501-2023 | 0.5 LU/HSW

This course is designed to introduce the architect to egress marking systems that are used for ordinary way finding and building evacuation in emergency situations. These signage systems are meant to be selected and installed according to specific standards established by building codes. Additionally, once installed, these systems must be tested to assure their efficacy in case of an emergency. How to select and specify the appropriate markers and the technological solutions available, as well as testing methods, will all be covered in this course.

Light & Wellness: Design Ramifications of Circadian Lighting in the Built Environment | 1LU/HSW

A comprehensive AIA accredited course developed by USAI on Lighting and Wellness. This course focuses on the science and design criteria essential for proper implementation of circadian based design. Topics covered include a) evolution of circadian rhythm, b) health implications of circadian disruption, c) how light impacts the circadian system, d) evidence based metrics, e) design considerations, and f) conceptual discussion of applications.

Deciphering Sustainability: Understanding The Environmental Impact of a Lighting System | 1 LU/HSW

Many designers and engineers have made great strides in reducing the amount of power needed for a lighting design solution. As we strive to decarbonize, we can look deeper into questions of materials used in luminaires. Where are they sourced? Are harmful chemicals used? Are the luminaires designed with the least amount of carbon footprint possible? How is this measured? These and other questions will be discussed along with a presentation of an example of an environmental impact report for lighting materials and a design philosophy that puts sustainability first and foremost in design decisions.

Why Buy American Act & Build America, Buy America Act Compliance Matters for Lighting Specification | 1 LU/HSW

This course provides architects and design professionals with the essential knowledge to specify lighting products that comply with the Buy American Act (BAA) and the Build America, Buy America Act (BABA). Participants will gain a clear understanding of the federal sourcing requirements, how they impact project specifications, and strategies for ensuring compliance when selecting materials and products for federally funded projects. The course will also cover key differences between the two acts, compliance challenges, and best practices for working with manufacturers and suppliers.

Integrated Ceiling Illumination: Exploring Lighting Solutions That Take Installation To Architectural Integration | 1 LU/HSW

This course explores how purpose-built lighting solutions integrate seamlessly with ceiling systems to support architectural integrity, simplify installation, and streamline the specification process. Participants will learn how to best interface with stakeholders involved in a ceiling integration project as there is a level of complexity that complicates these projects. This learning course can be seen as a best practice guide to navigating ceiling integration collaboration between specifiers, manufacturers and contractors.
